Several hundred Georgetown residents gathered at the Faith Community Center downtown on May 4th, our National Day of Prayer, for music and fellowship.
Many community leaders, including Sheriff Robert Chody, businessman Ty Gipson and Advocate Publisher Mike Payne led the group in prayer for our country, leadership, military, families, the media, and more.
Mayor Dale Ross proclaimed April 30-May 6 Georgetown’s Week of Prayer, which featured a number of community events coordinated by the Georgetown Ministerial Alliance President Dr. Ron Swain, congregations and members of many faiths across the city.
Mayor Ross spoke of the foundation of the celebration, which has its roots in the 1775 Continental Congress, during which the colonies were asked to join in prayer to begin building the country. He also emphasized the special nature of our local event; “I received a letter from some folks in Wisconsin who said it was illegal for me to tell our citizens to pray. I and my lawyer notified them that we don’t care what the people of Wisconsin think we should do.”
