GISD Reaching out via Community Summits

Georgetown ISD held the first of what they hope will be many Community Based Accountability Summits intended to give parents an opportunity to provide feedback on the measures they believe are important indicators of student success. About 30 participants gathered in the Innovation Center of Georgetown High School for a constructive and instructive opportunity to speak face to face about breaking down the State-based accountability to what we really need in our own community.

Superintendent Dr. Fred Brent says; “This puts our feet in the water but we are planning more focus groups and inviting people in to talk about our vision and beliefs and how they match up with things like STAAR assessments and our current accountability. Our goals state that we want so much more than test results so we’re talking about how do we build a community of accountability that measures what parents and the community value.”

The summit included several small groups of parents, educators and professionals talking about wish lists; everything from improved lunch programs to STEM education. “We are starting slow and this is important and we will build on this.”

GHS Principal Wes Vanicek was a principal contributor to the group. “My hope is give people an understanding of the decision making process. For many, their school experience is not much more than their child and a teacher. This is a chance to give some thought to greater school issues and gives parents the opportunity to understand how schools really work and how each person can affect change, take advantage, and restore some local control by having a seat at the table.”  Visit GeorgetownISD.org/departments
