Valerie Nicholson can be described as a ubiquitous presence in Georgetown. Aside from owning and operating a local small business, time spent volunteering, and participating in abundant family-centric community events, she is involved with myriad organizations throughout Georgetown, from the Main Street Program where she is an Economic Vitality Committee Member to her role as a V.P at the Williamson Museum. She was also appointed by the Mayor to serve on the Georgetown Commission on Aging, and is engaged with many other civic and non-profit organizations. It is this engagement and experience that she says make her “uniquely qualified to lead District 2.”
Nicholson has garnered endorsements from five current Council Members, including Keith Brainard, the retiring councilman from the district she plans to represent, who said, “I am honored to endorse Valerie Nicholson for the District 2 seat on the Georgetown City Council. Valerie knows Georgetown; this is where she works and is raising her family. Valerie also volunteers here. Her unique culture and sense of community make Valerie an outstanding candidate for this position.” Nicholson has also earned endorsements from Councilman Steve Fought (District 4); Councilman Tommy Gonzalez (District 7); Councilman John Hesser (District 3); and Councilman Ty Gipson (District 5). All indicated that their support was the result of the outstanding contribution in time and talent that Nicholson has invested into the city, and the consensus among them is that she will come to the job fully prepared to serve the citizens of her district and the city as a whole.
Nicholson describes herself as fiscally conservative, and says she plans to bring that characteristic to the council. “It is vital to be certain that every dollar we spend is to the benefit of the residents of Georgetown. Of course, a top priority is public safety and I will always have an eye toward ensuring that we maintain and strengthen our efforts in this arena.”
She also is cognizant of the importance of Georgetown’s mobility issues, noting that creativity and an open mind are needed while exploring the various solutions.
Nicholson defines her primary goal on council as “to show up, to have read and understood the volumes of material we receive before meetings, and contribute where I can.”
“I believe the city is well-managed. The council is, fundamentally, a leadership group that charts direction, and then trusts the professional staff of Georgetown to execute that direction and deliver results.
“Replacing a man like Keith Brainard will be a worthwhile challenge. His depth of knowledge on budget and policy issues is extraordinary. I pledge that I will use every resource at my disposal to continue working to make Georgetown an exceptional place to live, work, and raise a family.
