Yes and No—The One Place We Can Still Agree

If there ever was a reason, or a time, to live in Texas, it is now. Even if I didn’t write another sentence, I believe that most readers would understand exactly what I am talking about.

In this discussion let’s not talk about Democrats and Republicans; instead, let’s talk about something on which everyone can agree—right and wrong.

Right was watching President Obama and Michelle standing on the platform on January 20th, offering up the peaceful transition of power, as has been the custom of our country since George Washington.

I applaud them for that, and expected no less. Frankly, I always considered the conspiracy theories that the Obama administration would somehow declare martial law and thus retain power for a third term to be crazy talk. And, I honestly thought it couldn’t get any crazier than that. As we say in Texas, Boy howdy, was I surprised!

Since I promised this discussion would be about right or wrong, let’s assess the following list with that thought in mind:

Were the protests on Inauguration day proper? That’s easy. Yes

Was the burning of the independent limo driver’s car okay that day? Obviously, no.

Was it okay to leave tons of garbage behind on the ground the next day at the Women’s March? That’s pretty easy. No, of course not. Remember, taxpayers had to pay to have that mess cleaned up.

Was it okay for the losing side to declare this election “illegitimate” because the Electoral College prevailed? That’s a no-brainer. Our system was designed to give everyone an equal voice, so that would be a resounding, no.

Is it okay for the press to gather around this White House like a pack of rabid wolves, parsing every word thinner than finely chopped cilantro in your favorite salsa recipe?  Of course not. The press didn’t go crazy when President Obama said he visited all 57 states, did they? This is another clear, no.

Was it okay for CNN’s Donna Brazile to send Presidential contender Hillary Clinton’s campaign the questions in advance to an upcoming debate (for which she was ultimately fired)? Ask a school teacher if they condone this type of test preparation. Another resounding and obvious, no.

Was it alright for Madonna to say she’d spent a lot of time thinking of how to “blow up the White House”?  I’ll go with no on that one.

Is it okay that there are continued protests about President Trump, including “not my President” on Presidents Day. It is.

That is a definite Yes. That’s what this system is all about. I may not agree with you, but if it stands for free speech, I’ll fight to the death for your right to say it.

Is it alright that so many Hollywood stars such as George Lopez and Amy Schumer threatened to move out of the country if Trump won the election? Yes, it’s fine. In fact, what’s not okay is that they haven’t stood on their principles and done it already.

Is rioting, looting, and burning down cities the way to protest. No. Period.

We can agree to disagree— that’s a cornerstone of America. But there’s also something called common sense and decency. I pray, somehow, America can get back to that.  It has prevailed here since the Alamo here in Texas, and it still prevails today. That is why I am proud to be in Texas, and there is nowhere in the world I would rather raise my family, along with yours! Long live Texas!
